How Do You Fake A Cell Phone On Screen?

For the short film ‘Umbra’ we had a couple shots of a cellphone screen.

We didn’t film an actual phone during the 2 shooting days we had. Instead of taking the shots out, I made them in Blender by modeling a mockup mobile phone with a screen. The screen uses a node-based shader that breakdown any input image into it’s basic RGB components. Then it recreates it through a procedually generated brick texture that mimics the size of the RGB color switches on most LCD screens.

The outcome looks convincing enough for the film.
